Weight Loss Injections

The Practice has been receiving a high volume of private prescription requests for privately prescribed GP1-agonists such as Mounjaro, Wegovy and Ozempic. Due to the already existing and increasing volume of NHS workload, we are unable to take responsibility for these prescriptions and so will not be able to review these as they come through.

The decision to take these medications must lie with the individual patient themselves. It is the patient’s responsibility to undertake this in a safe manner by being transparent with their private health provider about the medications they are prescribed from the Practice, particularly including HRT and existing medications for diabetes as well as their accurate weight so that they do not come to harm.

For women under age 55 years prescribed weight loss injections privately: Tirzepatide (Mounjaro) may mean that your contraception pills do not work effectively. If you are using the contraceptive pill, please use condoms for four weeks after each dose change, to avoid an unwanted pregnancy. This does not apply to Semaglutide (Ozempic). Please contact the practice for a routine appointment if you want to discuss your contraception or HRT if you are taking Mounjaro.

For women prescribed weight loss injections privately and prescribed oral combined HRT or oral progesterone (Medroxyprogesterone / Norethisterone / Utrogestan) in combination with oestrogen patch / spray / gel: These may have an impact on the effectiveness of your HRT to adequately protect your endometrium (womb lining). Failure to have inadequate progesterone cover does increase your risk of developing endometrial cancer. Please contact the practice for a routine review so that we can discuss potential alternatives.

NHS Prescribing Requests
We have received a high volume of queries regarding prescribing of weight loss injections such as Wegovy and Mounjaro following the published approval by National Institute for Clinical Excellence and Scottish Medicines Consortium. However the funding for this has not yet been agreed either centrally by Scottish Government or locally by any Health Board in Scotland and therefore GPs are not in a position to prescribe these medications for weight loss at the present time.
We have also been advised by NHS Lothian against referring to the Lothian Weight Management Service specifically for weight loss injections at this time. We will update this section once we have received approved guidance regarding this.

Non-urgent advice: Please Note

We are a training practice, which means that your appointment may be with a qualified doctor undergoing further training to become a GP (a GP specialist trainee). If you would prefer not to have an appointment with them, please inform reception at time of booking.

It is becoming more common for patients to travel abroad for some medical procedures. If you choose to do this, please ensure that you have arranged aftercare as your GP is not obliged to offer routine follow up care for any treatment provided abroad.
